Sorry love, you’re getting a christmas jumper!

Oh how we all laughed together with Bridget back in 2001 when we saw Mark Darcy’s christmas jumper which he wore only to please his mother.

Who would have thought that only a decade later, christmas jumpers are going to be considered really trendy and super cute! I wear mine all winter…8))

Here is an awesome selection of vintage and handmade festive knits – still plenty of time to shop online!—jm1021-red/168105

Cover up//stay hip

My normal holiday wardrobe is usually made up from denim shorts, tank tops and little dresses. Therefore everytime I visit a predominantly muslim country,  I have to plan a little about what will I pack. In the more touristy places you can dress as normal (with exception of churches etc.) but it is nice to show respect. It wouldn’t feel right to cover up completely though, especially if you like the sunshine, but you can find relevant clothes which also look cool and hip. Maxi dresses, flowing skirts, pretty shawls and casual tops are just the thing.  If you are lucky enough to have a holiday planned, check out my selection below from Etsy for inspiration.

The Flapper Girls

Whilst watching the beautiful 2011 silent movie  The Artist it reminded me again how classy and elegant were women in the 1920s.  The hair was always perfect and the clothes so sophisticated!

Bérénice Bejo stars as Peppy Miller.

Read more about the film’s amazing costumes here:

Girls like Peppy were called ‘Flapper’ girls in the 1920s. Wikipedia says: ‘This term was applied to a ‘new breed’ of young Western women who wore short skirts, hair cut into a short bob, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms.’

Charleston dancer Bee Jackson

‘Flappers had their origins in the period of Liberalism,  social and political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of WWI, as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe.

Flapper dresses were straight and loose, leaving the arms bare (sometimes no straps at all) and dropping the waistline to the hips. Silk or rayon stockings were held up by garters. Skirts rose to just below the knee by 1927, allowing flashes of leg to be seen when a girl danced or walked through a breeze. High heels also came into vogue at the time, reaching 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) high.’

2012 Spring/summer catwalks are full of 20s references right now and the high street is catching up fast.

However, if you want to own a bit of fashion history, original 1920s item will cost you which is hardly surprising as these are practically antique.
