Björk the fearless

I am really upset that I have missed the premiere of her new project Biophilia live in Manchester, so today I want to pay homage to this lady who has been amazing me for 15 years and who I think is a genius. Described by Björk as a 21st century “music of the spheres”, Biophilia is more than a new album, it is an attempt to bring musicology out of an abstract, linear learning context and into a world of rhythm and scales that appeals to the physical senses as well as the mind’.

So where do music, nature and technology meet?  A multimedia project encompassing music, apps, internet, installations and live shows, Biophilia celebrates how sound works in nature, exploring the infinite expanse of the universe, from planetary systems to atomic structure.

The show features a range of specially crafted instruments, amongst them a bespoke pipe organ that accepts digital information and a pendulum that harnesses the earth’s gravitational pull to create music. This together with Björk’s incredible performance joined by breathtaking video projections, David Attenborough narrations and an award-winning Icelandic female choir makes for a truly special show.

Björk did six shows at Manchester International Festival (tomorrow is the last one – sold out) striding on stage wearing huge platform shoes, a figure-hugging sparkly dress with a one-shouldered cape and a nebulous orange headpiece and will perform also at Bestival in September.

Despite the scientific and educational basis of the Biophilia suite it is clear that there’s real emotion invested in songs – just have a listen to the first single Crystalline:

Underneath our feet
Crystals grow like plants
(listen how they grow)
I’m blinded by the lights
(listen how they grow)
In the core of the earth
(listen how they grow)

Not only is she an exceptional musician, her individual style is also to be celebrated. Enjoy a fine selection of her beautiful and bonkers outfits:
